Prayer is so very important, and instinctively as humans we know this is true, the first thing most people do when they feel desperate, terrified or inconsolable is to reach out to a God they don’t even believe in, to ask for his help.
As Christians tho we should be talking to God all the time, yet as were new to the whole religious thing we feel we don’t know the right way to go about it.
I would say one of the hardest things to get used to, is the apparent one way conversation prayer evokes, not only do you feel like your talking to yourself, but without the other person adding their news you soon run out of things to talk about, the other problem is form, do I kneel, close my eyes, clasp my hands together, bow my head, whisper, talk in my head or out loud ?
The good news is that there is no right or wrong way to pray, the Bible says look up and to raise up our hands palms up, the rest is all religious tradition, mind there’s something to be said for closing our eyes. It helps to stop us getting distracted by things around us, the fundamental thing to remember when we pray, is that God always hears us, and always knows our heart.
There are many ways to converse with God, we can talk to him with reverence and humility when we are addressing our creator and almighty God, we can talk to him in earnest and gratefulness when we are addressing our father, or we can talk to him candidly when we’re addressing our brother and friend.
How we converse with God depends on what we want, what we’re asking for and where we are, there are times we come before him in humility and reverence, when we seek his forgiveness his grace and his mercy, there are times we raise up our hearts and worship his majesty, when we pour out our love for him, our gratitude and our desire to fill ourselves with his presence his peace and his joy, there are times when we seek answers and unload our worries upon him, when we question our lives and his silence, there are times we just want to chat and talk about this and that, we can pray on our knees, laying in bed or driving to work, because praying to God is the same as talking to anyone, the more we talk to God to better we get know him, the easier it is to strike up that conversation and to more rewarding it will become.
When your partner comes home you greet them with a hello or a joyful word, an intimate moment, a hug, a kiss, an I love you or an Ive missed you, it’s natural you don’t even think about it, but you sure recognize when they forget to.
God is always waiting for your attention, for you to remember him to spend time with him to build that personal relationship with him, prayer is our way to spend that quality time with him to be intimate with him to honour him and to acknowledge his importance in our lives.
Always pray he’s always ready to hear and always ready to answer, as the old saying goes, if you don’t ask you don’t get!
